KNOXVILLE — "Freedom to Read" will be the topic at the Marion County Democrats Presidents Day Soup Luncheon on Sunday, Feb. 18, from 1-4 p.m. The event will be held at the Sprint Car Hall of Fame in Knoxville.

Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from speakers Sam Helmick, Iowa Library Association Past President, and Christy Hickman, General Counsel for Iowa State Education Association. Helmick will discuss current challenges to public libraries and intellectual freedom as a result of state legislation. Hickman currently represents the Iowa State Education Association in litigation against the State of Iowa regarding Senate File 496 which resulted in book bannings in public schools.

The meal will feature a variety of homemade soups provided by Marion County Democratic Party members. Accompanying beverages and desserts will also be available. Free will donations will be welcomed to benefit the Marion County Democratic Party.

Participants are encouraged to bring donations of canned soups and fruits (pop top cans preferred), peanut butter, cereal bars, etc. These items will be delivered to food pantries in Knoxville and Pella as a Martin Luther King Day of Service project.
