Iowa has been named the winner of a national excellence in education award. Iowa is the recipient of the prestigious 2009 Joseph H. Oakey Excellence in Education Award from Project Lead the Way, (PLTW) Inc., a not-for-profit STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education program now in more than 3.200 secondary schools nationwide.
The 2009 Joseph H. Oakey Excellence in Education Award will be presented to the state of Iowa at 11:45 a.m., Tuesday, March 23 in the Iowa State Capitol Rotunda. Governor Chet Culver has been invited to accept the award on behalf of the state. The award will be presented by John Lock, President/CEO of Project Lead the Way. The announcement highlights a day-long legislative showcase of the successes of Project Lead the Way in Iowa.
Iowa is being recognized for its outstanding commitment to PTLW, its commitment for providing high school students with greater access to higher education and its strong efforts in building partnerships among the department of education, K-12 education, Iowa community colleges, Iowa regent universities, the department of economic development and Iowa businesses.
“Iowa’s leadership in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education is key to our economic success,” said Chet Culver, Iowa Governor. “We need to be diligent in maintaining and growing our investment by supporting an excellent educational system—from pre-K through post-secondary. Project Lead the Way is a key component in a comprehensive state-level suite of solutions aligning our top-notch schools, museums, community colleges, private and public universities, businesses, and youth-focused agencies to fuel Iowa’s engine of innovation.”
PLTW’s Joseph H. Oakey Award recognizes states for visionary and innovative educational leadership on behalf of students, teachers and citizens.
“Iowa’s stellar growth of the PLTW program, enhanced recognition of STEM education and thoughtful approach to STEM teacher licensing have placed Iowa as a leader in education,” said John Lock, President/CEO of Project Lead the Way.
