Des Moines — Governor Chet Culver has been named as the 2010 honoree for the “State and Local Leadership Award,” by Voices for National Service, a nationwide advocacy group for cutting-edge public policy in the area of community service and volunteerism. Governor Culver was awarded this designation because of Iowa’s “leadership and innovation in leveraging national service to meet state and local needs.”
“It is my honor to accept this award,” said Governor Culver. “I do so on behalf of the literally thousands of people in our state who have rolled up their sleeves and volunteered to help people address unmet needs across the state, country, and overseas. From helping to rebuild after the floods of 2008, to our recent response to the disaster in Haiti, Iowans’ ‘spirit of service’ is alive and well.”
In 2009, Governor Culver proposed and signed Senate File 482, which established the first-ever state “Green Corps,” an initiative which will help young people serve our state while weatherizing homes of families in need. This bill also removed the tax burden for AmeriCorps members’ education awards, opening additional venues for Iowans to serve. Today, there are more than 1200 AmeriCorps members in Iowa, and thousands of private volunteers statewide.
Governor Culver joins Senator Tom Harkin and Congressman Dave Loebsack in being named as 2010 honorees by Voices for National Service. This represents the first instance of three Iowans receiving national recognition for the promotion of service opportunities state and nation-wide. Jackie Norris, Senior Policy Advisor at the Corporation for National and Community Service, is scheduled to accept the award on Governor Culver’s behalf at a ceremony tonight in Washington, DC.
