Video, slideshow: Knoxville girls earn first victory

Knoxville — The Knoxville girls' varsity basketball team broke out of its slump and earned its first victory of the year by defeating Grinnell 51-34 Friday night.

Coach Jim Uitermarkt attributed the victory to the girls playing four good quarters for the first time all season. His team has struggled to put together a complete game all year and had a record of 0-3 coming into Friday.

The Panthers consistently held the lead throughout the game. Leading the team in points was Ashley Hawkshead, with 13, including going 8 for 11 from the free throw line.

Hawkshead was followed by Ricki Hall, who scored 10. Taylor Carter and Meredith Cunningham each chipped in nine.

"I think one of the biggest things tonight was that we were the more aggressive team," Uitermarkt said. "Grinnell's a really, really aggressive team. We had to find a way up there."

Next up for the Panthers is a showdown with Centerville at home at 6:15 p.m.
