Pleasantville —
Just minutes before the POI All Star Basketball players took to the court, Hunter Van Haalen, a Pleasantville senior, suggested that it would be pretty funny to do a football play off the tip. Everyone agreed with him that it would, so they decided to do it.
At the start of the game on Saturday nights game in Corydon, Van Haalen tipped the ball to Pleasantville teammate Collin Thomas, who went down into a football center position. He then snapped the ball to Wayne’s Bryce Carpenter, who rolled out to the left, threw the basketball just over half-court to Van Haalen, who then ally-ooped it into the basketball net. JD Neilson from Martinsdale St. Mary’s fell into football guard position, as Brodi Brownlee from I-35 played as the football position of running back.
Fame was brought to Pleasantville after they put the video of the football play on YouTube.
In three days, it had over one million views, and was featured on WHO Channel 13, KCCI Channel 8, Good Morning America, ESPN Sports Center and Sports Nation, and Jimmy Kimmel Live. Van Haalen was also interviewed by Channel 13.
Other antics put in the game were granny- style free throws by Thomas, a left-handed 3 pointer by Van Haalen, who is dominantly right-handed, and a motto of, “Only dunks and 3’s,” throughout the game.
The final score of the game was 69-67 with POI West falling short to POI East.
When asked what was their initial outcome of putting up the video on youtube, Van Haalen replied, “We thought we’d take a crack at Sports Center’s Top Ten Plays of the Week.”
After being asked, “What made you decide to put a football play in a basketball game?” Van Haalen laughed and answered, “Just to be funny.”
