PTO International Night tonight at Northstar

Knoxville —

The Knoxville Elementary PTO is planning an International Night on Tuesday, Feb. 19, from 6-8 p.m., at Northstar Elementary. According to representatives Steve Linsley and Dave Garcia, who delivered a report on the PTO to the school board last Monday night, there will be 12 presenters, each in a different classroom. Each room will showcase food, clothing and other aspects of the land's culture.

Garcia said the intent of the event is to bring more families out, to bring them together. The public is invited to attend.

The PTO's report to the board included highlights of their fundraising and contribution over the past few years, since the district went to grade-alike building alignment and the organizations from East, West and Northstar combined.

Garcia told the board about the success the organization has found in its Spell-a-thon and Jog-a-thon fundraisers. Parents responded to a survey that indicated they preferred activities such as these, opposed to door-to-door sales to raise money. For instance, the net income from last spring's Jog-a-thon was around $12,000.

PTO has used the money for a variety of uses, including snacks, t-shirts for track and field days, yearbooks, Dollars for Scholars scholarships and providing scholarships to teachers for continuing education. The group has also paid for field trips and helped teach students about sharing with the less fortunate, through the Giving Tree.

“I know how important the PTO is,” School Board Vice President Mike Helle said. “Everything you do helps this school district out tremendously.” Helle thanked Garcia and Linsley on behalf of the entire board.
