Knoxville — Knoxville High School Ag Science and FFA students have been working on a project to create and paint barn quilt blocks that reflect Knoxville's history.
FFA Advisor Brent Hanna, who will continue to work through June, despite retiring, said the students began researching for this project in February. Painting began in May.
The idea came from the Jacobsen Building on the Iowa State Fairgrounds, which displays quilt blocks of Iowa's counties. The Knoxville blocks can be purchased in the future, and displayed. Hanna hopes to create a map, when the signs are in place, to guide someone on a tour through the Knoxville School District.
Among those things the students have identified as being in Knoxville's "DNA" are sprint car racing, coal mining, the Iowa State Flag, agriculture, education and the Peace Tree. Students are painting the blocks to reflect these this summer.
"This is the first time," Hanna said. "We did a lot of research."
Most of the blocks will be 4'x4', though there are some 8'x8'. Costs to purchase the blocks have not been established, though Hanna estimates they will cost $100 each.
We'll continue to follow the students' progress as they continue this project.
