Nearly 49 percent of Knoxville students on free or reduced meals

Knoxville — As of Oct. 1, Knoxville Schools' enrollment was at 1,744 students. Of those, 659 students receive free meals and 193 receive reduced price meals, making the total percentage of students receiving meal assistance at 48.85 percent.

The building with the highest percentage of students receiving free or reduced meals is West Elementary, which holds the district's youngest students.  A total of 63.96 percent of those students are receiving the aid.

Oct. 1 is also the state's official count day. Enrollment numbers on that date help the state determine the amount of aid a district received.

With declining enrollment an ongoing concern for Knoxville, it should be noted that West also has the lowest number of students enrolled, with 283. Knoxville High School has 542 students enrolled, the highest number among the district's five buildings. Northstar Elementary is second with 505, followed by Knoxville Middle School with 390 and GOAL with 24.

Certified enrollment and class sizes are on Monday's school board agenda for discussion. As for the remaining figures regarding free and reduced meals, they are as follows:

Northstar: 201 receiving free meals, 56 receiving reduced price (50.89 percent).

KMS: 143 receiving free meals, 48 receiving reduced price (48.97 percent).

KHS: 151 receiving free meals, 60 receiving reduced price (38.93 percent).

GOAL: 11 receiving free meals, 1 receiving reduced price ((50 percent).

The Knoxville School Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, at 309 West Main.
