Knoxville — Approximately 300 volunteers are spending their Saturday morning helping friends, neighbors and the community.
They are taking part in A Call To Serve Ministries (ACTS) service surge. This is the second such event to be held in Knoxville.
ACTS Founder Joel Bennett said this was the biggest event for his group, which has led similar surges in Ottumwa and elsewhere. Volunteers were assigned to groups, then given various tasks at different locations throughout Knoxville. Tasks include wheelchair ramp construction, garage improvements, picking up trash, brush clearance and more.
Volunteers we spoke with say they volunteered because this is what one is supposed to do when one is a Christian. In addition to volunteering, 170 canned food items were collected for local pantries and $3,600 was raised.
The money raised is helping ACTS and Meals from the Heartland package 24,000 meals to be sent to Haiti. Volunteers working on other projects around town are also taking shifts at Celebrate Community Church, packaging the meals.
Bennett said the event has been a success thus far. We intend to catch up with him for a full report in the May 20 Journal-Express.
