Northey campaigns for Heartsill

Rural Columbia — Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey stumped for fellow Republican and candidate for Iowa House District 28 Greg Heartsill Monday night. 

Northey said he met Heartsill in 2006 and has gotten to know the family for the past several years. He said he was there to support Heartsill because it is important to have people in the Legislature who know how to balance budgets and live within their means. Northey added that Heartsill knows agriculture, which remains a significant aspect of Iowa's economy.

"We need good ag voices," Northey said. 

Northey planned to discuss the importance of agriculture, and how it will be important for the next Legislature to be aware of the level of success farmers had this year. This year's yield is expected to be at about 80 percent of average, but it varies according to the field and the location, Northey said. Livestock farmers will also suffer if grain prices go too high. 

For these reasons, Northey believes the Legislature should pay more attention to what is spent and how they treat farmers. He knows Heartsill will do that. 

"We have to be really careful and it's really easy for state government to overregulate," Northey said. 

Northey spoke to a small crowd at Pierce's Pumpkin Patch in rural Columbia. A "potluck" style dinner was served.

• Governor includes Marion County in disaster declaration
  Governor Terry E. Branstad today issued a third proclamation of disaster emergency in response to recent storms and flooding in south and southeast Iowa. • Flags ordered at half-staff on Friday

Branstad has ordered all flags on the Capitol Complex be flown at half-staff from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 10, 2013, in observance of the Iowa Peace Officer Memorial Ceremony which is to be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 10, 2013, at the Oran State Office Building of the Iowa Department of Public Safety.

• Branstad approves commutation request

  Gov. Terry E. Branstad today granted Rasberry Williams’ commutation request. Williams, age 67, committed first-degree murder on July 20, 1974, in Black Hawk County. A jury convicted Williams of first-degree murder and he was sentenced to life without possibility of parole.  Today Governor Branstad commuted his sentence to life with possibility of parole.

  Recently, I was approached by a constituent at a Knoxville forum. He asked if I had a moment to discuss issues he was passionate about that have yet to be debated at the Statehouse. I was reminded of this conversation during a conference committee meeting on education reform this week. During that meeting, we spent an hour nibbling around the edges of the issue without ever coming to a consensus. Worse than that, we never even had conversation regarding the heart of the issue on education reform.

• Heartsill Report

  Last week witnessed some pretty important dates for Iowa taxpayers.  Clearly, the most obvious date was April 15, the deadline for all taxpayers to file their federal tax returns.  Just a few days later, April 18, marked an occasion known as “Tax Freedom Day”.  Tax Freedom Day is the day when the nation as a whole has earned enough money to pay off its total tax bill for the year. Tax Freedom Day provides Americans with an easy way to gauge the overall tax burden that we share.
