Obama staffer at Helping Hands

Knoxville — An Obama for America staff member had a table set up at Helping Hands Food Pantry this morning. 

Kader Toovi said he was there to register voters. Today is one of the non-profit facility's busiest days, as approximately 8,000 pounds of food were distributed to 350 needy families.

The table was set up inside the door of the facility, operated by the Knoxville Area Ministerial Association. Taped to the side was a sign that read "Rural Iowans for Obama." Democrat campaign materials, as well as a volunteer registration sheet with the Obama-Biden logo were on the table. 

Seated beside Toovi was Cindy Jones, who was registering Helping Hands customers for food stamps. One woman who received a Helping Hands food basket today, claims she was told that if Mitt Romney won the presidential election, he would end the food stamp program. 

Toovi said he was not authorized to talk to the press, without a prior appointment being scheduled with the Obama campaign's communications director. An email has been sent to the Obama campaign to learn more about Tuvi's presence at Helping Hands. 

Chuck Galeazzi with Helping Hands said that he would provide Republicans the opportunity to have a table inside the facility as well, at the next "food day" event. Marion County Republican Chair Irene Blom said she had not been notified of this opportunity before today, when contacted by the Journal-Express.

• Governor includes Marion County in disaster declaration
  Governor Terry E. Branstad today issued a third proclamation of disaster emergency in response to recent storms and flooding in south and southeast Iowa. Fifteen counties are included in this proclamation:  Appanoose, Clinton, Davis, Decatur, Des Moines, Jefferson, Keokuk, Lucas, Marion, Monroe, Ringgold, Van Buren, Wapello, Warren and Wayne.

• Flags ordered at half-staff on Friday

  Gov. Terry E. Branstad has ordered all flags on the Capitol Complex be flown at half-staff from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 10, 2013, in observance of the Iowa Peace Officer Memorial Ceremony which is to be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 10, 2013, at the Oran State Office Building of the Iowa Department of Public Safety.

• Branstad approves commutation request

  Gov. Terry E. Branstad today granted Rasberry Williams’ commutation request. Williams, age 67, committed first-degree murder on July 20, 1974, in Black Hawk County. A jury convicted Williams of first-degree murder and he was sentenced to life without possibility of parole.  Today Governor Branstad commuted his sentence to life with possibility of parole.

  Recently, I was approached by a constituent at a Knoxville forum. He asked if I had a moment to discuss issues he was passionate about that have yet to be debated at the Statehouse. I was reminded of this conversation during a conference committee meeting on education reform this week. During that meeting, we spent an hour nibbling around the edges of the issue without ever coming to a consensus. Worse than that, we never even had conversation regarding the heart of the issue on education reform.

• Heartsill Report

  Last week witnessed some pretty important dates for Iowa taxpayers.  Clearly, the most obvious date was April 15, the deadline for all taxpayers to file their federal tax returns.  Just a few days later, April 18, marked an occasion known as “Tax Freedom Day”.  Tax Freedom Day is the day when the nation as a whole has earned enough money to pay off its total tax bill for the year. Tax Freedom Day provides Americans with an easy way to gauge the overall tax burden that we share.
