Thank you! Thank you to everyone in Iowa Senate District 40. It was an amazingly enjoyable campaign. I met thousands of incredible Iowans. Thank you to all who supported my positive campaign. While I was not given the opportunity to serve the people of southern Iowa at the State Senate, I am thankful to ALL, regardless of who you supported. You participated in the political process; you worked on campaigns, you walked in parades, you engaged candidates at your doors, you knocked on doors yourself, and you voted. Throughout the campaign I was very impressed with the level of engagement. I wish Senator-elect Rozenboom well. May we continue to be a people who fix our thoughts on things that are true, honorable, and good. Let us all continue to rally around those issues which unite us, and continue to make Iowa the great state that it is!

Sinclair never felt uncomfortable in caucus
Des Moines media this week have been reporting on the dismissal of former Senate Republican Communications Director Kristen Anderson. Anderson is alleging sexual harassment led to this, and Republicans contend that she was dismissed due to her performance. Sen. Amy Sinclair is a female Republican Senator, and says she has never felt uncomfortable around her male counterparts.

Governor includes Marion County in disaster declaration
Governor Terry E. Branstad today issued a third proclamation of disaster emergency in response to recent storms and flooding in south and southeast Iowa. Fifteen counties are included in this proclamation: Appanoose, Clinton, Davis, Decatur, Des Moines, Jefferson, Keokuk, Lucas, Marion, Monroe, Ringgold, Van Buren, Wapello, Warren and Wayne.

Branstad has ordered all flags on the Capitol Complex be flown at half-staff from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 10, 2013, in observance of the Iowa Peace Officer Memorial Ceremony which is to be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 10, 2013, at the Oran State Office Building of the Iowa Department of Public Safety.

Branstad approves commutation request
Gov. Terry E. Branstad today granted Rasberry Williams’ commutation request. Williams, age 67, committed first-degree murder on July 20, 1974, in Black Hawk County. A jury convicted Williams of first-degree murder and he was sentenced to life without possibility of parole. Today Governor Branstad commuted his sentence to life with possibility of parole.

Recently, I was approached by a constituent at a Knoxville forum. He asked if I had a moment to discuss issues he was passionate about that have yet to be debated at the Statehouse. I was reminded of this conversation during a conference committee meeting on education reform this week. During that meeting, we spent an hour nibbling around the edges of the issue without ever coming to a consensus. Worse than that, we never even had conversation regarding the heart of the issue on education reform.
