Loebsack urges Democrats to get out the vote

Knoxville — Though he's confident half of his votes will "already be in the bank" by Election Day, Dave Loebsack encouraged Marion County Democrats to spend the last few days of the campaign working hard to get people out to vote.

"I am going to win," Loebsack said this afternoon at the Coffee Connection in Knoxville. He discussed a recent rating by the Cook Political Report, which recently placed Republican John Archer's chances of winning Iowa's Second Congressional District race at slim to none. An article, written by Scott Bland, was received from the Loebsack campaign by the Journal-Express that also indicates that Democrats do not believe they can retake the House of Representatives.

Loebsack focused on his own race. While traveling the district since last Friday, he has touted the endorsement he received from Knoxville Mayor Don Zoutte. Zoutte, a veteran and veterans' advocate, has expressed his anger with a comment Archer made, in which he said, "You have about 50 percent of the American population now believes that they are entitled to a government handout. That's a real weakness." Archer made the comment to KROS Radio on May 2.

Loebsack has interpreted veterans and senior citizens who depend on Social Security and Medicare were included in the 50 percent Archer referenced. The Republican has expressed his respect and appreciation for veterans during interviews with the Journal-Express, and denies allegations he was talking about them.

"The least we can do when they come home is to treat them with diginity and respect," Loebsack said of veterans. He also spoke of the need to respect seniors who have paid in to receive Social Security and Medicare benefits. Loebsack and Archer also disagree on the issue of privatizing these programs; Loebsack opposes this and Archer supports it.

Also speaking at today's event were Iowa House District 28 Candidate Megan Suhr and Iowa Senate District 14 Candidate Dick Schrad. They both praised Loebsack and his efforts.
