To the editor:
The residents of Knoxville were treated to a fantastic event on Jan. 26 at the high school. For most of the evening, we were part of an event that joined our coaches, athletes, fans, kids, citizens and visitors from Newton together in a common purpose; TO FIGHT CANCER.
What started as a spur of the moment opportunity last year has now transformed itself into a runaway train of good will and community service. Our community came together to raise $12,000 in a single night. It’s hard to imagine that we tripled our total from the previous year. One would question, “How can it be?”
The success of the event hinged on the hard work of the coaches, their families and volunteers too numerous to mention. It was inspiring to see a packed gym, a sea of pink shirts, the band playing, silent auction, Booster Club and volunteers participating in such a great event.
Hearing the testimonials of those that are fighting cancer were inspirational to all of us. We realized that many of our day to day struggles pale in comparison to many of those around us.
On Tuesday night, we were at our best because we chose to serve others who need our help and prayers. Congratulations to our community for setting such a great example for our kids and communities around us. The bar of excellence has now been set.
