To the editor:

I was amazed at the comparison of the two columns in last week's (Sept. 14) Opinion page of the Journal-Express. From the reasoned pleading of Charlotte Shivvers asking for a serious look at the proven future damage to our planet by climate change on one hand, and on the other your scurrilous attack on President Clinton and your opinion of the Democrats' relationship to God.

If there was disgrace in President Clinton's personal actions during his very successful second term in office, it was by the large group of politicians that swore to destroy him after his first day in office, even resorting to a misguided attempt to impeach him while he was in office. He was acquitted, and left office with the highest end-of-office approval rating of any president since World War II.

As for the Democrats' problem with God, I was surprised that you were given the revelation that many Democrats advocate the legality of “killing babies.” I've known a lot of Democrats, and I've never heard one say that they would advocate killing babies.

However, I've heard many people, of both political parties, say that they believe it's the duty and the God-given right of each individual woman to make decisions about her own body and not be ordered by any other person, or politician, to make those decisions for her.

As you know, I have complimented you several times for your skills and ability to edit our local newspaper with fair and unbiased news articles, and all I am asking for is fair and truthful opinions in your House of Wood.

Editor's note: Ted Eller is a good man, for whom I have tremendous respect. I consider him a friend. However, if you're curious as to my opinion, or why I chose to say Democrats advocate killing babies, I pulled this from the Democratic Party Platform: “Protecting A Woman's Right to Choose. The Democratic Party strongly and unequivocally supports Roe v. Wade and a woman's right to make decisions regarding her pregnancy, including a safe and legal abortion, regardless of ability to pay. We oppose any and all efforts to weaken or undermine that right.”

Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, or whatever euphemism is used, or any kind of semantics about a pregnancy being just another health issue, aborting a pregnancy is killing a baby. It is a life extinguished. Do fathers have rights when it comes to abortion? Does the child? Pregnancy is not just about the woman.

Regarding Clinton...disgrace is defined as “loss of honor, respect or reputation, shame.” He lied under oath. He was impeached. In my opinion, I view him as a disgraced former president.
