Disagrees with Editor as well

To the editor:

The recent comments you made by calling everyone who disagrees with you on the abortion issue “baby killers” is exactly what is wrong with political discourse today. Intelligent, caring people should be able to disagree on issues without being called nasty names by others – especially in a public newspaper. Such disrespectful and insulting attitudes are why our public officials cannot get anything done. Compromise and respect for others used to be considered virtues. Now we see public officials proud of creating total gridlock instead of bending even a little. We have cable news shows, talk radio and political ads reducing political disagreements to spewing lies, hate and name calling.

There is by no means a universal definition of when a fetus becomes a person or baby. Some believe that a fertilized egg is a person from the moment of conception. Others believe it is when the fetus has developed sufficiently that it can live outside the mother, at the point of viability. Different religions have different beliefs and should be respected.

The current practice of insulting and disrespectful political speech does nothing to move our city, state or country forward. You do not understand the words “respect” or “friend” if you think your remarks to Ted Eller did not violate both. The people of Knoxville deserve better.
