Helen M. DeHaai, age 90 of Monroe, died peacefully Monday, Sept. 10, 2012, at the Jewish Senior Life Center in Des Moines. Funeral services were held on Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, at the First Baptist Church in Monroe, with burial following at Silent City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Salvation Army. Condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com.

The daughter of John and Rachel (Brown) Shaffer, Helen was born on May 17, 1922, in Reasnor, Iowa. On Dec. 25, 1941, she was united in marriage to Dick F. DeHaai at the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, of which she was a member. Helen and Dick faithfully attended the Monroe Baptist Church for many years. Helen enjoyed baking, sewing and working in the garden.

Those left to honor her memory include her children, Jack DeHaai and his wife Sharon of Clive, Julia Gullion and her husband Tom of Hamilton, Barbara DeHaai of Pleasant Hill and Marie Anderson and her husband (Guy) of Scottsbluff, Neb.; five grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren, and a sister, Beulah McDaniel of Clarence, Iowa. Preceding Helen in death were her parents, husband in 2009, two sisters, Opal Patterson and Pearl Baker, and three brothers, Clifton Shaffer, Melvin Shaffer, and Lawrence Shaffer.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Life Center Memory Care staff for the loving care given to our Mother in her final years.
