Virginia Harl

Knoxville —

Virginia Harl was born on April 28, 1925, in Bedford, Iowa, the daughter of Bennett and Cora (Shane) Humes.  She was united in marriage to Elza J. Harl on July 31, 1941, in Rockport, Mo.  The couple moved to Lovilia in 1960 where they lived for over 30 years.

Virginia worked as a nursing assistant at Skiff Medical Center in Newton for seven years and at the Monroe County Hospital in Albia for 20 years.  She retired in 1982. Virginia moved to Knoxville in 1990, where she lived for 17 years, before settling in Pleasantville where she had lived for the last five years.  Virginia passed away Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, at the Knoxville Hospital at the age of 87 years.

Virginia was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Knoxville.  She liked crocheting, reading and working crossword puzzles.  She also enjoyed writing poetry.  She was a very important person to many people and became known as “Aunt Virgi” to those whose lives she touched.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Ben (Marcia) Harl of Pleasantville, Steven (Linda) Harl of Minnetonka, Minn., Linda Jaquez of Lincoln, Neb., and Janet Martin of Fairbanks, Alaska; brother, Edward (Jackie) Humes of Palatka, Fla.; sisters, Gwen Quigley of Muscatine and Georgia Quigley of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Zelma Harl of Kellogg; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elza in 1983; and siblings, Eunetta Quigley, Judith Prevo and Francis Humes.

A funeral service was held on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Williams Funeral Home in Knoxville with Pastor Joseph Perricellia.  Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery in Lovilia.  For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Seventh Day Adventist Church or to the Knoxville Hospital and Clinics.
