Charles Yates

University Park —  

Charles J. Yates, 78, passed away on Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, at University Park Care Center.

Charles was born on May 5, 1934, in Albia, to Helen Tiona (Kellogg) and Earl Roy Yates. He served in the US Army from 1952 to 1955. Charles was employed by Pittsburgh-Des Moines Steel for 41 years, retiring in 1993. 

Charles enjoyed fishing and watching NASCAR. He was a Hawkeye fan and a member of AMVETS II.

Charles is survived by his children, Lloyd Parkhurst, Eugene Parkhurst, Anita (Mike) Bell, Keith Yates, Kent (Carla) Yates, Brenda Yates, and Scott (Leann) Yates; siblings, Richard Yates, Ethel Bregar, Beverly Bostedor, Bonnie Jones, and Evelyn Rockwell; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Loretta Jane (Gourley) Yates; and son, Richard Parkhurst.

A memorial visitation was held Monday, Oct. 8, 2012, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines.
