Melcher-Dallas —
Services for JoMary Smith, 86, were Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012, at the New Hope United Methodist Church in Melcher-Dallas.
JoMary was born Nov. 14, 1925, in Storm Lake, Iowa, to Benjamin and Blanche (Welker) Roberts. JoMary graduated from Milo High School in 1943 and Simpson College in 1947. She taught in Davenport for six years and then was married to Laverne Smith on June 28, 1953, in Melcher. They were blessed with three daughters: JoAnne, Barbara, and Peggy. She taught Junior High English and Reading in Melcher-Dallas for many years retiring in 1986. She was an active member of the New Hope United Methodist Church and her Melcher-Dallas community.
Family was the most important part of her life. She was always there to support and look after her girls, and as she had grandchildren, she enjoyed going to all their activities being their biggest fan. Gram loved to spoil them and made sure they had a good time at Grandma and Grandpa’s. The grandchildren remember the money to go to Casey’s to get candy everyday, her homemade macaroni and cheese, family dinners, and playing in the yard.
JoMary passed away Aug. 3, 2012, at the Knoxville Hospital at the age of 86 years. She was preceded in death by her husband Laverne Smith in 1996 and brothers, Lyle and Arlo Roberts.
JoMary is survived by her daughters: JoAnne (Craig) Anderson of Chariton, Barbara Hillebrand of Carlisle, and Peggy (Gary) Freese of Johnston; 8 grandchildren: Ben Brooks, Scott Anderson, Brady Anderson, Darcy Graves, Brad Hillebrand, Bart Hillebrand, Amanda Pietsch, and Patrick Freese; great grandson, Barrett Hillebrand; six step great grandchildren; sister, Jean Roberts of Mt Pleasant, Mich., and twin sister, JoAnne Tarrant of Pleasantville.
