Sylvia Elizabeth Birkenholz was born February 28, 1916 in a farm in Lucas County to Charles and Lydia (Kimler) Briggs.  She was united in marriage to George Edgar Birkenholz on February 22, 1938 in Prairie City.  She spent her entire married life in Knoxville in a home built by George.  She worked in the kitchen at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Knoxville for many years.  Sylvia also volunteered at the hospital for 44 years, serving 21,980 hours.  In her spare time she enjoyed tending her flowers and taking pictures.  Most of all, she loved spending time with her family.

Sylvia passed away Monday, January 28, 2013 at the Knoxville Hospital at the age of 96 years.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George in 1957; and sons, Billy Joe and Doyle G. Birkenholz.

She is survived by her children, Irvin (Gay) Birkenholz and Linda (Willem) Castel; daughter-in-law, Dixie Birkenholz; 5 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; 1 step-great grandchild; 8 great-great grandchildren; and 1 great-great-great grandson.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 2 at 10:30 a.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Knoxville with Elder Bill McDonald officiating.  Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in Knoxville.  A visitation will begin one hour prior to the service.  For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made the Knoxville Church of Christ or to Hospice Care Initiatives.
