Berniece Horn

Knoxville —

Funeral services for Berniece Horn of Knoxville were held on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at the Mason Funeral Home in Pleasantville with Pastor Donna Murphy-Ceradsky officiating.  Burial followed in the Pleasantville Cemetery.  Musical selections of “In the Garden” and “How Great Thou Art” were shared by Midge Brooks, organist.  Casket bearers included:  Pat Barnes, James Jr. Gibson, Mark Buzzard, Loren Sisler, Jim Skinner and Jim Buzzard.

Alice Berniece Draper was born on Oct. 5, 1926, in Beech, Iowa, the daughter of Earl Eugene Draper and Hazel (Bowery) Draper.

Berniece graduated with the Pleasantville High School class of 1944.  While in school, she was on the dance team, played saxophone and piano and played on the basketball and softball teams.  Berniece was united in marriage to Roland Ernest Horn on June 10, 1944.  The two lived in Ottumwa for 24 years where Berniece was PTO president and worked with the Girl Scouts for over 20 years as a leader and cookie chairman.  She had two Girl Scout troops and chaperoned them to Colorado and Canada.  Berniece was also a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts and worked as a Children’s Librarian in the Ottumwa Library and as a bookkeeper for the Board of Education.

In 1973, they moved to St. Paul, Minn., where she worked as a typing aide at Henry Sibly High School for seven years and took correspondence classes from the University of Minnesota majoring in Library Science.

They moved to Bolingbrook, Ill., and Berniece worked as a teacher’s aide for Valley View School District for five years until they retired and in 1985 moved to Leisure Lake in Trenton, Mo.  Berniece was active in the Trenton Christian Church as CWF President, was Sunday School Superintendent and church librarian.

She loved to cook and was banquet manager for the church and served several banquets as fund raisers for the church.  In 2000, they moved to Knoxville where she was active in the Knoxville Christian Church as a Deacon, Worship Leader, and wrote the bulletins.  When that church closed, Berniece returned to the church that she was baptized in, the Pleasantville Christian Church.

She was a wonderful seamstress and made many beautiful quilts that she gave as gifts.  Berniece also sewed clothes for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a great cook and made many kinds of pies.  Berniece was a loving person and volunteered helping many people in her life.  She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much and will be greatly missed.

Berniece passed away on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at the Griffin Nursing Center at the age of 86 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Martin.
