Knoxville —
Paul Umble, Jr., was born on Aug. 9, 1931, near Dallas, to Paul and Sarah (O’Brien) Umble. He attended school in Dallas, Pleasantville and Lacona. He graduated from Lacona High School in 1949.
On Sept. 3, 1952, Paul married Margaret Mart at the Methodist Church in Dallas. (This year, they would have been married 60 years.) They were blessed with four daughters: Kathy, Connie, Rachael (Shelly), and Paula.
Paul joined the National Guard and on June 19, 1953, was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he had his basic training @ Fort Ord, California. He was stationed in Germany as a wheel vehicle mechanic until May 25, 1955, when he was honorably discharged.
Early in his working career, Paul enjoyed being a farmhand. Later on, he became his own boss; milking 30 head of Jersey cows and rented a small farm with his wife.
He worked at Firestone in Des Moines at Vermeer in Pella. He retired from Vermeer in 1994, with 25 years if service.
In his spare time, Paul was usually outside, puttering around on his 1952 Golden Jubilee Ford tractor, disking his garden, doing yard work, or any other excuse to ride his tractor. His garden was his pride and joy. He belonged to the Seed Savers Exchange and Heirloom Seed Organization.
Paul passed away on Wednesday, June 27, 2012, at the Comfort House in Pella, at the age of 80 years.
