Harriet Hindman

Scottsdale, Ariz. —

Harriett Hindman was born on May 29, 1943, at Knoxville. She was the oldest of four daughters of James and Mary (Beary) Hindman.

She spent her youth in the Pleasantville community and graduated from Pleasantville High School in 1961. Harriett then attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City, and graduated in 1965 with a degree in Journalism.

While at college, Harriett developed a lifelong passion for sports, acting as the sports editor of the Daily Iowan, the campus newspaper. She was an voracious Iowa Hawkeye fan for life.

After her graduation, Harriett was immediately hired by United Press International (UPI) in the Phoenix, Ariz., market.  Harriett worked diligently for UPI for over 25 years.  After her regular “day job” in Phoenix, Harriett acted as the team statistician for the Phoenix Suns basketball team, a role she fulfilled for 25 years.  The last 19 years of her active career, Harriett was employed at KTAR Radio in Phoenix, her last title there was news editor.

Harriett will be remembered as being very detailed and strived for perfection in her work.  Harriett succumbed to her battle with cancer on Aug. 11, 2012, at Hospice of the Valley in Scottsdale, Ariz.  She was just 69 years old.  Harriett's memory will be cherished by her surviving family: her mother, Mary Hindman of Pleasantville; her sisters, Margaret Hindman of Pleasantville, and Jeanne Staiert and her husband Dave of Carroll; a nephew, Mike Staiert and his wife Kara of West Des Moines; and nieces, Sarah Zovistoski and her husband Michael of Mundelein, Ill., Kellie Staiert of Chicago, Ill., Kristen Staiert of Anita, and Kate Friedrichson and her husband Adam of Storm Lake, great nephew, Jaxon Zovistoski and great nieces, Alivia, Emerson and Madden Zovistoski.

Harriett was preceded in death by her father, James Hindman, and her sister Joyce Hindman. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Phoenix, Ariz., and was affiliated with several press organizations.

Saying she loved sports would be an understatement, as it encompassed her daily life.    Harriett was an active, “always on the go” type of woman.  She loved spending time with her family, particularly when she came home every summer to visit. Harriett was a wonderful hostess to people who came to visit her and always had something planned for the day. She will be missed by all whose lives she touched.

Mass of Christian Burial were held Saturday, Aug. 18, at the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Knoxville. Interment was in Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley in Scottsdale, Ariz.
