Knoxville — Family and friends gathered this afternoon at the Lake Red Rock Cultural Center for lunch, stories and memories, to celebrate the newest inductees into the Knoxville High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
The Class of 2012 include the 1980 boys' cross country team, wrestler Joe Glissman, baseball player Dave Capitani and track star Bob Edwards. Each individual inductee was given the opportunity to address the dozens in attendance.
Capitani was involved in many sports, though he is entering the Hall as a baseball player. He thanked the committee, friends, family and the coaches who helped him during his high school career.
Those salutations were similar for all of the individual inductees. Edwards shared stories of his coach, who did not live up to a promise to buy him a malt after winning an event at a meet in Iowa City. Though Edwards joked, he sincerely shared his admiration of the man.
Glissman, Knoxville's only state wrestling champion, also had some fun. After a speech in which he reminisced, thanked coaches and shared other appreciation, he ended it by thanking his "smoking hot wife" for her support.
Former boys' cross country coach Greg Stults learned a lesson from Glissman and immediately thanked his wife when he took the podium. Stults discussed members of his team and his own memories as a student and coach. Two members of the team also spoke and shared a letter prepared by a third team member who was unable to make it.
A more formal ceremony is scheduled for tonight's (Friday) home basketball games. The Journal-Express will be there and look for much more on the Hall of Famers in the Feb. 3 and subsequent editions.
