Memorial Day activities

Marion County — Many events will be held in Marion County for Memorial Day weekend. 

 

Dallcher Legion Post #632 Announces Memorial Day Schedule
 
Dallcher Legion Post Commander Darrell Thomas, Jr. stated that the members of the American Legion, Dallcher Legion Post #632, Melcher-Dallas, Iowa will conduct its annual “Memorial Day” services on Monday, May 28, 2012, at the nine locations and the time scheduled for each place as listed below:

We would appreciate organizations like the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Lions Club, Fire Department and any other clubs to attend the Memorial Services in the park.

Memorial Day Flag Raising

Flags will be raised at Graceland Cemetery Friday, May 25, at 7 a.m. There will be a brief memorial tribute at the Veteran's Plot after the flag raising. Participants in the flag raising are invited to a free breakfeast at the Knoxville VFW. Flags will be taken down at 3 p.m., on Tuesday, May 29. Please join the American Legion, VFW, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts at these events. 

 

Pleasantville Memorial Day activities

Pleasantville American Legion, Post 108, will observe Memorial Day by holding ceremonies on May 28 at our local Cemeteries.  This year, we have been requested to add Spurgeon Cemetery to our schedule. Our plans, weather permitting, will be Pleasantville; 1000, Swan; 1030 and Spurgeon at 1100. For more information, please call Dennis Harkin, 515-729-8369 or Dennis Murphy, 515-250-5153.

There's always something happening at Lake Red Rock!  Check out these Memorial Weekend Programs and Activities:

Red Rock's Wildlife

Friday, May 25, 7 p.m., Whitebreast Campground Amphitheater
Saturday, May 26, 3:30 p.m., Wallashuck Campground Playground
Learn about the many different animals that call the Lake Red Rock area their home!  Identify furs of area mammals and discuss their adaptations used for survival.  There will be also be a special guest appearance by some live snakes!

How Does the Dam Work?

Saturday, May 26, 1 p.m., North Tailwater Recreation Area (Follow the sidewalk to the door at the base of the dam)
Join a Park Ranger to learn about how the dam works and how the Corps of Engineers uses a variety of instrumentation to operate and maintain the dam.  (Please note: program participants will not be going inside the dam)  

Pond Exploration

Sunday, May 27,1 p.m., North Overlook Campground (meet at bike trail junction)
Monday, May 28, 1 p.m., Wetland off of Jewell Drive (road to Ivan's Campground - look for traffic cones along road for meeting place)
Go "mucking" at one of the lake area's wetlands!  Dip nets and tubs will be available for you to try and catch some of the critters swimming and crawling in and around the area!  Mucking can be messy, so please wear old shoes and clothes.  

"Bobber the Water Safety Dog" Cartoons 

Daily During Memorial Weekend  - 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. - Red Rock Visitor Center 
Join Bobber and his friends Corky, Sinker and Tackle for some water safety adventures!  Kids can also get a free Bobber tattoo!
