Earth Hour Event Highlights Effects of Climate Change

St. Anthony Catholic Church invites you to participate in Earth Hour, a global effort to raise awareness of climate change and get people talking about solutions. During Earth Hour, people, businesses, governments and communities turn out their lights for 60 minutes to support environmentally sustainable action. Nearly 7,000 cities and towns in 152 countries and territories took part in 2012. This year’s Earth Hour will be held on Saturday, March 23, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. 

St. Anthony’s will host an Earth Hour event that includes a viewing and discussion of the Oscar- nominated film, Sun Come Up. The film tells the story of the world’s first environmental refugees. It follows the Carteret Islanders, a community living on an island chain in the South Pacific Ocean. They must leave their ancestral land and find a new home because a rising sea level caused by climate change is causing their island to sink. 

The Earth Hour event will include a simple meal, the film and discussion, and observance of Earth Hour with an ecumenical prayer service and vigil.  The event will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on March 23 at St. Anthony’s, 1201 Woodland Dr. in Knoxville.
