Knoxville — While on vacation, Sheriff Ron Goemaat received a report of possible embezzlement involving an employee of the Marion County Fair Association. No arrest has been made as of Friday morning.
In an interview with the Journal-Express, Goemaat said the suspected employee allegedly admitted to misappropriating the money. The sheriff's office is investigating the crime. Today, deputies are transporting computers to the lab at the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation to gather more evidence.
Goemaat was contacted by a member of the Fair Association. According to Goemaat, this person discovered some missing money, which spurred the investigation.
The Fair Association is conducting an internal audit to calculate an exact amount of missing funds. Goemaat said the embezzlement appears to have gone on for a period of time. The investigation is trying to uncover how much money is missing to indicate which degree of theft the suspect will be charged. Goemaat said the investigation may take a few days, but he is confident an arrest will be made.
The Journal-Express will continue to follow this story as it develops.
