Two selected for Boys State

Knoxville — Knoxville High School students Ben Thomas and Brendan Finan have been selected by American Legion Post 168 to attend the Hawkeye Boys State Camp from June 9-14, 2013, at Camp Dodge in Johnston.

Legion representatives Conrad Nelson and Jack Spaur were at KHS this morning to formally present the students with information about the trip. The Post is paying $250 for each student to attend.

During the week, the attendees will learn about the democratic form of government, the organization of political parties and the price paid to preserve democracy. This will include mock elections, lawmaking and a trip to the statehouse.

Finan said he is unsure of what he is looking forward to the most in the week. He is eager to learn more about government and elections on the state level. Thomas said he is eager to learn and to meet new people.

Every state, with the exception of Hawaii, has a Boys State program, or one similar to it. The program began in 1935.
