Gov. Chet Culver has officially proclaimed Oct. 4-10, 2009, as 4-H Week in Iowa. The proclamation ties in with National 4-H Week activities in the state and throughout the country.
The theme for National 4-H Week is "Meet the Future."
"Governor Culver’s proclamation is a great honor to the Iowa 4-H program," said Chuck Morris, director of the Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development program. "Many 4-H projects and activities emphasize science, technology, leadership, citizenship, communication and the environment. Iowa youth also continue to participate in traditional 4-H projects such as livestock and gardening."__
National 4-H week traditionally signifies the beginning of the new 4-H year. Marion County 4-H will celebrate National 4-H week by the County Council members going to the 4th grade classrooms in Marion County and sharing their experiences in 4-H and telling them what 4-H is about and how to get involved. Marion County currently has 16 traditional clubs throughout the county as well as a few specialty clubs such as a Shooting Sports Club, a Jr. Master Gardener Club, a Robotics Club, and a Tech Team. 4-H is open to all youth in grades 4th – 12th, however Marion County does offer Clover Kids for anyone in kindergarten – 3rd grades.
The leaders, clubs, and members are encouraged to celebrate National 4-H Week by hanging up posters, wearing their 4-H shirts throughout the week, telling everyone about 4-H and inviting them to the next club meeting, or doing something as a club to get the 4-H logo out in the community.
It is important for the Marion County 4-H program to give praise to all of the volunteers. The 4-H program wouldn't run without those wonderful volunteers that give countless hours to the Marion County 4-H Program! The 4-H program is lucky to have hundreds of volunteers to support the members and families year around. Volunteers range from club leaders, 4-H committees, superintendents, project leaders, 4-H foundation, extension council and anyone else who gives their time to Make the Best Better.
4-H is for everyone and it is very simple to get started. For more information check out the Marion County 4-H webpage at: www.extension.iastate.edu/marion/kidsteens.htm or give the Marion County Extension Office a call at 641-842-2014 or email at kimdavis@iastate.edu and they will get you set up with a club that fits your interests!
