Friends trying to raise funds for new M-D library

Melcher-Dallas — The Friends of the Melcher-Dallas Public Library are trying to raise money to construct a new building.

The library serves approximately 565 patrons annually, according to Director Lori Davis. Thus far, the small but dedicated group of people trying to raise funds has brought in $65,000.

Davis said land has been donated to the City of Melcher-Dallas on two occasions, both sites intended to be used for the construction of a new library. Economic expansion opportunities arose, and the land was sold to make those happen.

Without knowing where they can build, Davis said it is difficult to say how much will be needed for a new library. She would like to see the community have a larger library to be able to offer more services to local residents. Davis has received training to offer courses on computers, interviewing for jobs and writing resumes.

Fund raising opportunities are available. The Lions Club is hosting bingo at the community center on Oct. 6, Nov. 3, Dec. 1 and Jan. 5, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. On Saturday, Oct. 20, from 7-10 p.m., Albert Butler and Friends will perform at a singing and dancing event at the community center. Cost is $5, with children 10 and under getting in for free.
