Officer in Tuesday crash cited

OTTUMWA — The Ottumwa police officer involved in a Tuesday collision with a garbage truck has been cited for the crash.

Ottumwa police received several 9-1-1 calls at about 11:05 a.m. Tuesday, with callers reporting either a drunken driver or a person driving who needed medical assistance. Officer Joshua Kobes responded.

Kobes was driving with lights and siren going when he approached the intersection of McLean Street and Main Street. Kobes was northbound entering the intersection when he collided with an garbage truck.

The Iowa State Patrol investigated and cited Kobes for violating Iowa Code, which says disregarding traffic laws during emergencies, "shall not relieve the drivers from the duty to drive with due regard for the safety of all persons or protect the drivers from the consequences of the drivers' reckless disregard for the safety of others."

Kobes was treated and released at Ottumwa Regional Health Center following the crash.
