Multi-media has a different meaning for Osky artist

OSKALOOSA — Kimberly Stutting doesn't limit herself to just one form of art.

Stutting graduated from Central College in Pella in December of 2010 with a degree in fine arts. Her art work includes glass, ceramic, watercolor painting and mixed-medium pieces.

“While I was there, I just kind of found I had a passion for almost everything and I figured while I was there I should at least experiment and try everything since they have the facilities and all the equipment there to utilize,” said Stutting.

Since then she’s gotten a Masters in Business Leadership from William Penn University this past August.

Glass blowing isn’t commonly taught at higher education institutions in Iowa. Stutting said Central’s glass blowing program is a unique one.

Stutting said there is a bit of a planning process when it comes to completing a piece of glass art. Once the planning of a piece is done, creating it doesn’t take long.

“The actual process to create them is maybe only 20 minutes to a half hour,” explained Stutting. “And that’s just because you have to work continuously with the hot glass.”

Some of the pieces Stutting creates aren’t just there to appeal to the eye. They’re functional, as well.

“Some of these are plates,” said Stutting, referring to her ceramic pieces. “You can actually eat right off them if you want.”

Nature and her family tend to inspire Stutting when it comes to her paintings. She said her daughters have been a particular source of inspiration.

A lot of Stutting’s paintings portray unique perspectives, some of which are very up close and personal.

“I kind of get their perspective from them,” said Stutting of her daughters.

When it comes to art, Stutting says she enjoys conversing with other artists about their work. She also enjoys watching people interpret some of her work, as well.
