Shooting team aims at funding opportunity

OSKALOOSA — The Oskaloosa Shooting Team is taking aim at a unique opportunity.

For every dollar the team raises, the MidwayUSA Foundation, Inc., will match it with $3, said coach Steve Heaton.

“The team has a tremendous opportunity now until the end of the year,” said Heaton.

Heaton said the team has been involved with fund-raising efforts for themselves with pop can drives and garage sales, as well as some raffles. Team members and their parents have been “working overtime” to this end, noted Heaton.

The additional funding the Oskaloosa Shooting Team receives will help them to become self-sustained, Heaton said.

The kind of competitive shooting Oskaloosa Shooting Team members participate in is the second most expensive sport when done at the Olympic level, said Heaton. He said the number one most costly Olympic sport is that involving horses.

The shooting team is raising funds for things like trips to competitions, ammunition, and other operational fees, said Heaton. The team participates in numerous competitions throughout the year from the first weekend in much of the spring and summer months. Competitions are typically on Saturdays, followed by team practices on Sundays, noted Heaton.

Shooting competitions teach team members a lot of things, said Heaton. He said there is a great emphasis placed on how to become a good team member. Heaton pointed out that there are no “bench warmers” on the Oskaloosa Shooting Team.

“It’s more about life lessons,” he said. “They learn how to respect each other.”
