Supervisors approve plans for Indian Way improvements

OSKALOOSA — The Mahaska County Board of Supervisors approved final plans for improvements to Indian Way in preparation for RAGBRAI XLI this summer.

The supervisors approved moving the 2-inch asphalt overlay project to the 2013 fiscal year so the project could be done before the July bicycle event.

Mahaska County Engineer Jerry Nusbaum said he’s looking at a May letting for the approximately 3-mile project.

Supervisor Mike Vander Molen said RAGBRAI officials have not officially released the route the bike ride will take across the state.

Nusbaum said that he is certain that Indian Way is the route bike riders will take to reach Oskaloosa from Knoxville.

In other action, the supervisors set a public hearing on the reclassification of a stretch of Merino Avenue from 135th Street to 140th Street in Union Township. The roadway will be reclassified from a “B” level road to a “C” level that does not get regular maintenance. The public hearing will be held at 9:30 a.m. on March 18. Nusbaum said certified letters will be sent to landowners affected by the move.

The supervisors also approved committing $3,357 to the AHEAD Regional Housing Trust Fund. The supervisors also approved the third and final reading of the General Relief Ordinance.

Finally, Nusbaum announced that Mahaska County received an award of excellence plaque from the Iowa Concrete Paving Association and the Iowa Department of Transportation for the paving of County Road V13 from the intersection of 275th Street to 255th Street.
