Storms to snow in less than 24 hours

OTTUMWA — Southeast Iowa saw considerable rain overnight. Less than 24 hours later it could be looking at considerable snow.

The Ottumwa area saw an official rainfall of 0.46 inches. That's enough to put January right where it should be. And the high temperature of 61 early Tuesday morning was enough to break the previous record of 57.

It all ends tonight.

Temperatures are expected to fall for the rest of the day. Rain will begin shifting over to a wintry mix, which will change to snow by about 3 a.m. The entire area is under a winter weather advisory.

About an inch of snow is expected overnight in Ottumwa, with another 1-3 inches falling Wednesday.

The snowfall gets heavier to the north. Oskaloosa is expecting 1-3 inches overnight, with another 1-3 inches Wednesday.

Pella could see 2-4 inches of snow before dawn Wednesday, with an additional 1-3 inches falling before noon. A similar snowfall total is forecast for Knoxville.

With all that, Centerville looks like it will get off light. Forecasters expect maybe two inches total with this storm.

After the snow comes the cold. Thursday's high temperature will be only in the low teens, with an overnight low around zero.

While such large swings in weather are unusual, they're not unprecedented in Iowa. There are well-documented cases where severe thunderstorms, including tornadoes, gave way to blizzard conditions within less than 24 hours.
