Southeast Iowa dodged an icy bullet

OTTUMWA — Southeast Iowa dodged a bullet with Sunday's ice.

The eastern two-thirds of the state saw ice accumulations of 0.1 inch or more, but the National Weather Service's map shows little more in the area.

Northeastern Iowa saw considerably more ice, with up to half an inch reported in some areas near the Minnesota border. That's more than enough to cause widespread power outages.

But back in southeast Iowa, 0.2 inches of ice was the most anyone saw. And most of that was melting rapidly by Sunday afternoon.

There's no ice in the immediate forecast, but Iowans will be back on a weather whipsaw. There's a chance of thunderstorms tonight, with temperatures rising overnight. Tuesday's high of 57(!) will come early, with temperatures falling through the day into the 40s.

Wednesday will remind the area that winter is still here, with highs only in the upper 20s. Thursday won't even move above the upper teens.
