The South Central Iowa Solid Waste Agency (SCISWA) wants to send you a text.
To do so, it has signed up to participate in a system that will allow it to send out text message alerts to the cell phones of people who sign up for the notices.
“The last time we had to close the Landfill because of a blizzard I sat in my kitchen and called customers for an hour,” said SCISWA Director Sara Bixby. “But we don’t have everybody’s cell phone numbers and not everybody was answering their phone at that hour of the morning. It was pretty obvious we needed a better way to let people know we would be closed.”
Bixby said she appreciates that the radio stations and newspapers serving the region help broadcast closings but knows that catching waste haulers, in particular, through those media can be kind of “hit or miss.”
So SCISWA is experimenting for the next year with text messaging. Anybody who signs up, by texting SCISWA to 36000, will automatically receive alert system notices from SCISWA. Bixby said she currently anticipates using the system for four types of events:
Facility closures due to bad weather
Facility closures or adjustments in hours for holidays
Monthly Board meeting reminders
Household chemical collection event notices
Although there is no cost to sign up for the alerts, Bixby said she understands standard text messaging rates will apply.
SCISWA is a regional government agency that provides solid waste transfer and disposal services within Lucas, Marion, Monroe and Poweshiek counties.
