Iowa drought status largely unchanged

OTTUMWA — Iowa saw little change in the drought over the past week and virtually none in southeast Iowa.

All of Appanoose, Davis and Monroe counties are in extreme drought, and only the tiniest slivers of northern Wapello County escape that category. Appanose and Marion counties are primarily under severe drought.

That's unchanged from last week's report from the U.S. Drought Monitor. Elsewhere, changes were nearly a wash. The percentage of Iowa under extreme drought conditions fell slightly, though the area under exceptional drought (the highest  category) rose a bit.

Archives from the drought monitor show this summer's rapid intensification of the drought. The entire state has been categorized as at least in moderate drought since the week of July 17, an 11-week span. But only two weeks earlier, on July 3, more than 80 percent of the state was categorized only as "abnormally dry."

Parts of southeast Iowa, including Appanoose and Wapello Counties, have been under drought conditions since the week of June 12.
