Iowa unemployment rises in July

OSKALOOSA — Iowa's unemployment rate rose in July to 5.3 percent, up from June's revised rate of 5.1 percent.

The numbers led Teresa Wahlert, director of Iowa Workforce Development, to describe the recovery since the worst of the last recession as, "slow and fragile." The figures put the total number of unemployed Iowans at 88,000.

The unemployment rate rose despite the number of Iowans leaving the workforce entirely. Officials estimate the state saw 9,900 people leave the workforce between June and July.

Government jobs performed the best, but there's a catch. Much of that was due to the end of summer break for people in education. Construction jobs fell.

County-by-county data was not available as of Friday morning.
