Woman charged with attempting to murder child twice

CENTERVILLE — An Appanoose County woman has been charged with two counts of attempted murder and two counts of child endangerment after allegedly attempting to murder her 5-6 month old child on multiple occasions.

Kristina Marie Kennedy-Maroney, 23, of Hicksville, Ohio and formerly of Centerville, was arrested by the Hicksville Ohio Police Department and extradited to Centerville after a warrant was issued for her arrest for offenses that allegedly occurred in apartment five at 113 1/2 West Van Buren in Centerville on September 2009.

According to complaint and affidavits filed by Centerville Police Officer Brandon Knapp, which were formulated from interviews the Hicksville Police Department had with Kennedy-Maroney following her arrest in Ohio, Kennedy-Maroney said she attempted to murder her 5-6 month old child on two separate occasions.

Kennedy-Maroney said she held her daughter in a bathtub with 2-3 inches of water for several seconds. The affidavit said Kennedy-Maroney was upset that her fiancé Dawayne Maroney would not help with the child.

Kennedy-Maroney then stated, according to the affidavit, that she "could not go through with the drowning and [the child] was coughing up water when she pulled [the child]'s head out of water." The affidavit goes on to say that when the child quit coughing up water, Kennedy-Maroney dressed the child and put the child to bed.

The defendant then admitted that on another occasion in September 2009, she attempted to smother the child with a feather pillow because Maroney would not help with their child and the child would not stop crying. According to the affidavit, "the defendant admitted that on an unknown day in September 2009, her daughter, [the child], would not quit crying and she was laying on a futon matters with [the child] when she decided to smother [the child] with a feather pillow. The defendant admitted that she took the pillow and placed it over [the child]'s face for approximately 10 seconds. The defendant stated that she realized what she was doing and that she could not go through with it and she removed the pillow from [the child]'s face. The defendant stated that [the child]'s eyes were closed and [the child]'s lips were turning blue and she thought that she had killed [the child] until [the child] began gasping for air. The defendant stated that she checked for a pulse on [the child] and found one and she performed mouth to mouth, blowing air into [the child] and [the child] began breathing normally again."

According to a press release by the Centerville Police Department Thursday afternoon, the arrest comes from an investigation that began on Jan. 19, 2012. Kennedy-Maroney is currently being held in the Appanoose County Jail pending future court proceedings.

The two attempted murder charges are each Class "B" felonies while the two child endangerment charges are aggravated misdemeanors. If convicted of all four charges, Kennedy-Maroney could face up to 54 years of imprisonment.
