Highway 432 project moves forward at Oskaloosa

OSKALOOSA — The Oskaloosa City Council has approved two items in a bid to advance efforts to repair Highway 432.

The council approved the first reading of plans, specifications, form of contract and estimate of costs for the Highway 432 Pavement Rehabilitation Project after holding a public hearing on the matter. The pavement rehabilitation project will include a stretch of Highway 432 from A Avenue West to Pella Avenue and will mean “full-depth” spot repairs, “hot mix asphalt overlay” and “shoulder stabilization around the roundabout near Oskaloosa Elementary School,” according to city documents.

Oskaloosa Schools Superintendent Russ Reiter says he’s glad that Highway 432 is a priority for the city.

“We’re excited to have a nice, smooth road come fall,” Reiter said.

A resolution awarding a contract for the project to Norris Asphalt Paving Co. in an amount not to exceed $321,634.50, base bid plus alternate bid item and authorizing City Manager Michael Schrock Jr. to use an additional 10 percent, $32,163.45, for the project’s contingency was also approved.Schrock explained that the 10 percent contingency is needed because, during the course of the project there may be items that arise and that will help prevent any potential delays with the project resulting from change orders.

The project is expected to last 20 working days and is slated to start in mid-July.

Schrock said the project should be a quick one and that it is anticipated to be done before the start of school.
