More deer taken in Ottumwa's 2011-12 bow season

OTTUMWA — Numbers were up for Ottumwa’s 2011-12 bow hunting season, which wrapped up on January 29.

This was the seventh season for bow hunters within city limits. The number of hunters rose from 28 in the previous season to 36 this time and the number of deer harvested rose as well.

All told, Ottumwa hunters brought down 58 does, four bucks and four button bucks. The total of 66 deer harvested was an increase of 37.5 percent from the previous season. Two hunters qualified for buck tags heading into next year’s hunt.

Bow hunting in Ottumwa began in 2005 as a way to reduce the number of deer in the city. Since then, hunters have harvested 612 deer within city limits.
