CENTERVILLE —
This weekend’s Centerville Wine and Arts Festival will feature the wine of a brand new southern Iowa winery, Smith Brothers, located in Agency. The Smith Brothers Winery, which celebrated its grand opening on April 6-7 is supported by the Smith Brothers' 10-acre vineyard, visible from US Highway 34 between Ottumwa and Agency, on their Centurion Farm.
Donald and Stephen Smith established the first six acres of their vineyard in the spring of 2006 and added four more acres the following year. After years of research, vineyard establishment, maintenance and hobby winemaking, they now offer midwestern wines to the public.
Other wineries at the festival will be Whispering Pines Winery located in Keosauqua, Crane Winery located in Selma, Rosey Acres Winery located in Runnells, Prairie Moon Winery located in Ames and the Widmar Family from Appanoose County. Tangleberries will be representing Arden Creek Winery from Letts and Tabor Home Winery. HyVee will also be sampling Arden Creek Winery.
In addition to Iowa wines there will also be arts and crafts vendors including jewelry, pillows, garden ornaments and hand-carved gourds.
Two groups, The Centerville Jazz Combo and The Harvest Band, will be provide musical entertainment on two stages throughout the day. The Centerville Jazz Combo is a group that began about two years ago. They performed at last year’s wine festival among other events. Members included for the wine festival will be Jim DePrizio, Mark Taylor, Tyler Morgan and Tim McBride.
The Harvest Band plays country, rock, oldies and originals. The three piece ensemble was established in 1981 and includes members Tom Robinson (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Mick Bailey (bass and vocals) and Jim Robinson (drums, percussion, vocals). The Harvest Band has opened large events for various national acts through the years. The group also has released four CDs since the early 90s. Although the group has toured many states they are currently happy performing in and about Iowa and Northern Missouri.
The Centerville Wine Festival is Saturday, June 9 from 3 to 8 p.m. in the Historic Courthouse District. Admission is $15 for wine sampling guests, which includes a custom wine glass. Admission is $5 for non-sampling guests.
