Moravia Community School District eyes expansion

MORAVIA — The Moravia Community School District school board during Monday's meeting listened as several options were presented by Superintendent Brad Breon on how they could proceed with adding additional classroom space to accommodate their growing enrollment.

Breon talked about the possibility of the purchase of modular mobile classroom units from a company in Oklahoma. He didn't raise cost, but he said the mobile units have restrooms, are air conditioned and heated.

Another option presented, and something the board will hear more about, is Breon looking at what the cost of the expansion would be if they dropped the free-standing gym from the original plans and then add one additional classroom to go from five to six total.

Breon said he would come back to the next school board meeting on Nov. 12 with more information on adding one classroom and dropping the gym.

The Moravia Community School District proposed public measure A — a $3.5 million bond issue to construct five new classrooms with restrooms and a freestanding gym that would be open for the public and would include a walking track, restrooms, a foyer, concession stands and boys’ and girls’ home and away locker rooms — to registered voters in the Moravia School District and it was defeated during a special school election Sept. 11.

The board did vote 5-0 to accept the public measure A bond vote results released by the Appanoose County auditor that showed 217 voted for the measure and 222 voted against public measure A.

"There really isn't a mandate either way," Breon said.

Moravia school board members are John Baty, John Houser, Heather Maletta, Steve Smith and Chris Spencer.
