Knoxville Boxing Club already has two champs
Knoxville — Jonathan Young, 19, won the Bantam weight (135) Midwest Fighting Championship (mixed martial arts) title June 27 in Centerville by defeating Mikey Garcia. Young is the second member of the Knoxville Boxing Club to hold a title.
The first was Lee Sandmeier, who holds the Midwest Fighting Championship Featherweight title. Sandmeier is going for a second title, the Extreme Challenge Amateur World Title in the Featherweight Division on Oct. 10.
Prior to that, boxing club member Adam Glover is going for a middleweight championship at an event in Knoxville on Aug. 14. According to Sandmeier, there are going to be at least three title fights at the event and will feature at least five Ultimate Fighting Championship veterans. The event is scheduled to coincide with the Knoxville Nationals and no further details were available as of our deadline.
The Knoxville Boxing Club meets in the upper level of the Memorial Building on Robinson. Sandmeier said the club was started as an alternative for young people to help keep them out of trouble. The only fighting taught there is boxing and no one is forced to box.
Sandmeier is a former Golden Gloves champion and realizes he cannot fight forever. He is looking for the next challenge and opportunity to share.
“I can always coach and give back to the community,” Sandmeier said.
The boxing club’s numbers are down this summer, but expected to increase in the fall. A formal open house for the club is also being planned.
