Update: Rollover accident on T-15

Marion County — A red minivan flew off of T-15, just before S-71 in the area commonly known as Chrisman's Corner, around 4 p.m. Friday afternoon. 

Witnesses told Sheriff Ron Goemaat that the vehicle was westbound on T-15 when it went off the road and landed on its front end before rolling over. The driver was the only one in the vehicle, and the airbag was deployed for his safety. 

The vehicle had Marion County plates. While not identified, the male driver was reported to be awake and conscious as  rescue workers carefully worked inside the vehicle to get him out. First responders gained acces into the vehicle by climbing into the back window. The driver was loaded into a Knoxville ambulance. 

Responding agencies included Knoxville Fire/Rescue, Knoxville Rural Fire Department, Marion County Emergency Management, Marion County Sheriff's Office and the Iowa State Patrol. Goemaat said everyone involved in the accident response had done a good job. 

As of this posting, the driver had not been interviewed by law enforcement to determine a cause for the accident. State Troopers were looking at the vehicle. 

First responders also want to remind drivers to occasionally look in their rear view mirrors as they drive down the road. Though the rescue vehicles had lights, sirens and horns activated, some drivers did not pull out of their way. Iowa law says these emergency vehicles have the right of way. Other drivers are to pull aside to let them pass.

    Gov. Terry E. Branstad today granted Rasberry Williams’ commutation request. Williams, age 67, committed first-degree murder on July 20, 1974, in Black Hawk County. A jury convicted Williams of first-degree murder and he was sentenced to life without possibility of parole.  Today Governor Branstad commuted his sentence to life with possibility of parole.
