Housing Warren County inmates brings in $65K

Knoxville — Through Thursday, Marion County has collected $65,200 from Warren County for housing jail inmates this year.

The Marion County Jail has housed 158 prisoners for a total of 1,659 inmate days to reach that total. Though the population of the jail has been increased with Warren County suspects, there is no further cost to Marion County beyond meals and utilities. The staffing level at the jail at a given time remains the same regardless of population.

Sheriff Ron Goemaat and Jail Administrator Scott Jerkins calculated the minimum daily cost of housing an inmate for other counties. The daily rate for housing an out-of-county inmate is $40, which is lower than other jails.

Jerkins said the Warren County Jail is smaller than the one serving Marion County, which is why the suspects are being held here. When asking voters to approve the $5 million bond in 2005, to pay for the Marion County Jail, former Sheriff Gary Verwers said the office would try to find revenue for the county by holding other suspects. In addition to Warren County, the Marion County Jail also occasionally holds prisoners for Prisoner Transport Services.

"Scott and his staff do a real good job," Goemaat said of Jerkins and the jail staff.

The money collected from housing inmates goes into the County's general fund.
