Pro-lifers protesting in Knoxville

Knoxville — Randy and Sharon Horn are walking along Pleasant Street in Knoxville today to protest abortion.

The protest is part of Iowa Pro Life's "Forty Days For Life" campaign. Today's sunshine and slightly warmer temperatures has offered the first opportunity for protestors to come out. Randy Horn said he had talked with the Knoxville Police Department prior to the protest to avoid breaking any laws.

The protest comes the morning after the Republican-controlled House approved HF 657, which would ban abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy in Iowa. Horn said he agrees with the bill, but wishes it would go further to protect unborn children.

HF 657 was drafted in response to the potential opening of a late-term abortion clinic in Council Bluffs. A doctor known for performing such abortions in Nebraska can no longer do so, after the Nebraska Legislature passed a similar bill in that state.

Iowa Senate Republican Leader Sen. Paul McKinley told the Journal-Express this morning that, when visiting Council Bluffs recently, he learned the town does not want the clinic. Sen. Mike Gronstal, leader of the Iowa Senate, represents Council Bluffs. The future of Iowa's late-term abortion bill, whether debated or brought to the floor for a vote, lies in Gronstal's hands.
